Course Description for EAL 7

DESCRIPTION
This course will be based on student work in core academic subjects: language arts, social studies, math and science. This will help students learn the English language that they need to succeed academically. Students will be asked to bring in questions about class notes, readings and other assignments in their core academic classes.

Students will be in a small group with other students from their grade level in the EAL Program. Because each student in the class has different strengths, they will be able to learn from each other.

• communicate with teachers and other students;
• be successful in completing school work;
• be an active participant in activities both inside and outside of the classroom.

ASSESSMENT
Student progress in learning English will be assessed by homework, class work, quarterly portfolios, quarterly projects and assessments (quizzes, tests, etc). Student performance on these activities will be reflected by their academic grade in the class.

Each assessment category is worth a certain percentage of the academic grade:

• Homework – 15%
• Class work – 25%
• Portfolio – 20%
• Projects – 15%
• Assessments – 25%

Responsibility in completing assignments, participation in class, attitude and use of class time are shown in the students' work habits grade for the class.

Current grades will be posted every Sunday or Monday on PowerSchool.

HOMEWORK
Assignments may be overnight or long-term. Students will receive homework one to three times each week. Students must complete all assignments neatly and on time. Assignments that are not neat and on time will not be accepted for full credit. If students do not turn in assignments, they will not receive credit for the assignment.

LATE WORK
Late work will be accepted only if students have an excused absence from class or with teacher permission. Students will have five school days after returning to school to make up the work. If students do not make up the work during that time, they will receive a zero.
